Stellar Holiday Sculpture, based on a small rhombicuboctahedron augmented with pyramids of varying heights on its faces. This sculpture was construced using pieces from Geomag Premium "Desire" sets.

Building Instructions[]

First, a rhombicuboctahedron is constructed using Rose Pink bars and matching panels (48 bars and 24 balls, 18 squares and 8 triangles). An attached base of 4 stacked square antiprisms in Pale Pink is built, with reinforcing Pale Pink square panels attached to each antiprism square (36 bars, 12 balls, 3 squares).

Upon each remaining square on the rhombicuboctahedron, a square-based pyramid is erected -- without a ball at the apex (it won't fit). For squares not adjacent to any triangle (5), I used a height of 4 bars, except for the top pyramid which used 5 bars (total of 4×4×4 + 4×5 = 84 bars). For squares adjacent to a triangle (12), I used a height of 2 bars (total of 12×4×2 = 96 bars).

For amusement I decided to add small pink pyramids (tetrahedra) to each triangle (8), this time with balls, because I could (8×3 = 24 bars, 8 balls).

WARNING: The tiny base for this sculpture makes it HIGHLY UNSTABLE and very easy to tip over. I haven't done that (yet), but figure it'll happen before long!

Tally:

  • Rose Pink Rhombicuboctahedron: 48 bars and 24 balls, 18 squares and 8 triangles
  • Pale Pink Stacked Square Antiprisms: 36 bars, 12 balls, 3 squares
  • Pale Pink Star Points: 24 bars, 8 balls
  • Purple Star Points: 180 Bars (=84+96)

Other views[]

Two views are provided of the Stellar Holiday Sculpture. The second view is topped by the object that inspired its creation, and surrounded by other festive ornaments. The small inspirational stellar object has points on the squares of a rhombicuboctahedron -- for my sculpture I went further and added extra pink points, just because I could, and it seemed fun.
