Interesting joining technique for the narrow spires: I think thatbthis type of "sphere-free" joint only really works in the 4 case, doesn't it, because the others are unstable.

I've used it before now as an intermediate step when joining two models, but now see it as a (weak) joint in its own right.

Yeah, for a horizontal square-based pyramid, an edge length of 4 bars was the longest I could use that would stay in place. They droop easily if jostled, unsurprisingly. The minor purple spires with an edge length of 2 bars are surprisingly sturdy, by comparison. A horizontal pyramid with an edge length of 5 bars collapses easily under its own weight. I did manage a length of 5 bars for the top spire, since it wasn't weight-challenged in such a severe way, but I didn't try more than that.

I think for simple stuff, if you can stand that it's not that strong, making joins without balls can be an OK plan. I can think of no other way to have made my model look sufficiently pointy without this 'cheat'. It's one cheaty way around the Geomag vertex angle limitation.
