### The 14 Puzzle Edit

14 Rods around a Sphere How to organize $N=14$ rods around a sphere, maximizing the minimum distance between them. Type Rods 14 × Spheres 15 × Author Amafirlian 13:10, 29 April 2007 (UTC)

The Geomag manual says that just fourteen rods can fit around a sphere (valency). Intriguing, I wonder if there is any reason for that?

This is s slightly controversial point: some say "its because 15 cannot fit" others (KH is in this camp) think that fourteen is one of the natural numbers that fall out of this type of geometry.

TODO: write all this up properly. For now here is a link to Karl's flckr set which has some nice models:

Thanks to Amafirlian for locating the true minimal solution.
